Pug Dog Information and Characteristics

A popular member of the toy group of breeds, the Pug is a barrel-shaped bundle of canine fun. With their unique appearance, they’re always the star of the show, and they have a sweet-natured, playful disposition too. They also have an easy coat to maintain, don’t require tons of exercise and they’re not a breed that barks very much either.

When you think of a Pug, you probably picture that chatty little alien from Men in Black — full of personality and full of… chaos at times. And that’s exactly why real-life Pugs need dog gear that actually works with their quirky build. And that’s exactly why YUDODO small dog gear matters so much. Let’s take a look at what the books don’t tell you.

Where Are They From?

Pugs are thought to have originated from East China, however this remains unclear. None the less, the pug continued to be a favorite of the Chinese rulers, bred specifically to be lap dogs during the Shang dynasty in 400 BCE. As their popularity grew, the pug became the companion of choice for Buddhist monks in Tibet, then for families in Japan and Europe. The pug was also enlisted by the Italian military to track animals and people and served as guard dogs.

What Are They Look Like?

1.Appearance

Despite their stocky build, Pugs are members of the toy breed. They weigh between 14 and 18 pounds and can be 10 - 11 inches tall. Their bodies are square-like, with substantial legs, whereas their heads are big and round, with a short muzzle, and deep forehead wrinkles. Their eyes are dark, shiny, and somewhat protruding, which makes them prone to trauma, and the tail is slightly curled over the hip.

Cold weather can be difficult for the small Pug to manage. Additionally, their big eyes leave a lot of sensitive surfaces exposed to the cold, which can cause its own slew of problems. Plus, Pugs have a short coat, so they tend to get cold more easily anyway. That’s why we recommend the YUDODO dog hoodie — the hood helps keep the head and surrounding areas warm, and the tie-dye design comes in two colors (pink-purple and blue-brown), making it a perfect fit for the Christmas vibe.

2.Personality

Unlike other toy breeds, Pugs are not very active but they make this up with their big attitude! The Pug even has its own Latin motto, “Multum in Parvo”, which translates as:“A lot in a little.”

They enjoy company and can be very affectionate, which makes them great companion dogs. Pugs are quite laid-back dogs, not usually prone to excessive barking or destructive chewing as long as they are provided with adequate mental stimulation and physical activity.

3.Common behavioral

They’re very food motivated, so care must be taken to not overfeed during training as pugs can quickly become overweight. Though known for being leisurely, Pugs are still an active dog breed that needs daily exercise. Their love of food means it’s important to keep them at a healthy weight. Due to their flat-faces and breathing difficulties, it’s essential to make sure they don’t overdo it. A little outside playtime or short walks are a great way to keep a Pug healthy.

A well-ventilated, comfortable, and secure travel carrier is crucial for your Pug’s safety during travel, especially if you’re flying or on a long car journey. The airline should be spacious enough for your Pug to turn around and lie comfortably but snug enough to feel secure. If traveling by car, a page that can be secured with a seatbelt is ideal. For car trips, the YUDODO dog car seat adds the security standard carriers often miss. And when flying, the airline approved carrier offers the ventilation and structure that make all the difference for a short-muzzled breed like the Pug.

4.Variety of Quirks

Many are tremendously food driven and will consume things that you don't consider edible. I'm not kidding. They will eat sticks, rocks, coins, screws, plastic caps off of bottles. You name it, they will eat it. They figure out quickly that the command "drop it" means you're going to take it away so many will swallow the forbidden object rather than give it up.

Featured in box office hits such as "Men in Black," "The Adventures of Milo and Otis," "Pocahontas" "Marie Antoinette" and in popular TV shows such as "The King of Queens," "Spin City" and "The West Wing," pugs are in high demand. They've even crossed over to the video game genre, staring in the Nintendo game Nintendogs and as the "Perky Pug" in World of Warcraft. So when you bring a Pug into your life, you’re not just getting a dog — you’re basically adopting a little celebrity with a whole resume of star power.
