The Fascinating History of the Pomeranian

It’s hard to believe it, but the tiny Pomeranian descended from the Spitz sled dogs in Lapland and Greenland. Before the Pomeranian was bred down to a smaller size, the larger dogs worked as shepherds. Indeed, it is not difficult to imagine today’s Pomeranian yapping around the edges of a herd of sheep.

Pomeranians got their name because they were imported into Europe through Pomerania, a land on the southern Baltic coast where present day Germany and Poland now sit. In Pomerania, the dogs were bred down closer to their modern-day size. It took many generations of Pomeranian to reduce the twenty-pound dog of the 19th century to the four to six-pound standard of the breed today. The Kennel Club in England recognized the breed in 1870, calling it the “spitz dog.” Traces of the Pomeranian’s lineage can be seen in its coat and color, which are reminiscent of the wolf spitz breed.

One of the best known Pomeranian owners in history was Queen Victoria of England, who ruled between 1819 and 1901. Queen Victoria first saw the dog as a girl, when her mother, Queen Charlotte kept one as a pet. Queen Victoria got Marco, a Pomeranian of her own, in 1888.

Besides appealing to royalty, through the decades the Pomeranian has also been a favorite of a variety of artists and celebrities. Perhaps the most famous artist in history, Michelangelo, painted the Sistine Chapel with his Pomeranian at his side.

Is Pomeranian the Right Breed for You?

1.Seasonal Care Tips

Even with their fluffy double coat, Poms need extra help when winter hits. These tiny pups can't handle super cold weather very well, especially when it's below 20°F (-6°C). Remember to wipe paws clean after walks to remove harmful deicing chemicals.

Keep your little buddy safe by not staying outside too long and getting them some warm winter gear – make sure to grab a good winter dog clothes that fits just right. YUDODO’s dog sweaters feature turtleneck and sleeveless designs, made from soft acrylic knit to keep your pup cozy and comfortable while allowing full freedom of movement during winter walks and playtime.

2.Does This Breed Get Along With Other Pets?

Pomeranians are often alert and expressive, so they may bark to alert their owners of strangers, noises, or perceived threats. Additionally, they may bark out of excitement, boredom, or as a means of seeking attention. That said, they definitely need some socialization and basic training if you want them to play nice with cats or bigger dogs. Poms don’t really get that they’re pint-sized, so sometimes they’ll try to pick a fight with a bigger dog just because they’re feeling playful — usually ends in them realizing size matters. With other small breeds, though? Absolute besties 99% of the time.

Bear in mind that Poms are very showy pups who like being the star of the show, so they might be a little jealous or possessive over you when you give attention to your other pets. You can manage this jealousy by making sure your Teacup Pom gets plenty enough love, but redirection works very well too. One practical way to keep your Pom close while still moving around is a YUDODO Pet Sling Carrier. With its soft bottom design and no rigid supporting plate, it offers a cozy spot for your pup to relax while staying safely by your side.

3.The Age of A Pomeranian Fully Grown

According to the American Kennel Club Official Pomeranian Breed Standards, an adult Pomeranian should weigh between three and seven pounds and stand between six and seven inches tall. There is no noticeable size difference between male and female Pomeranians.

4.Common Behavioral Issues

Some folks think “it’s just a tiny dog, why bother?” — but honestly, every dog benefits from training. It builds good habits and, more importantly, strengthens your bond. Positive reinforcement is the name of the game if you want a happy, well-adjusted Pom who isn’t turning every visitor into a personal alarm system.

5.Pomeranian Exercise Needs

Get your Pom dog involved in regular Pomeranian exercise. Allows Poms to engage their senses, thus improving emotional health. On the other hand, assists in decreasing osteoarthritis (a problem that 80% of dogs over the age of 8 can face).

Luxating kneecaps are pretty common in Pomeranians — basically, their tiny knees sometimes like to pop out of place.

When you’re out and about with your Pom, having a YUDODO Puppy Carrier nearby is super handy. If they ever get a bit sore or their little knee acts up, you can just pop them in the carrier and carry them without stressing their legs. The soft, supportive design makes it comfortable for them, so you can keep going with your walk without worrying.

At YUDODO, we understand the unique joys and challenges of caring for a Pomeranian. These tiny, spirited companions bring so much love and laughter into our lives, and in return, they deserve the best care we can provide.
